Multiple waterspouts were reported near Panama City Beach, Florida, on August 24, as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a special marine warning for the area. Video filmed by local resident Jeremy Guldin shows a large waterspout whirling just off the shore of Laguna Beach on Tuesday, while a smaller one begins to form next to it on the right. According to the National Weather Service waterspouts that form on open water are referred to as “fair weather” waterspouts and are usually less powerful and less destructive than “tornadic” waterspouts, which form over land. “They develop at the surface of the water and climb skyward in association with warm water temperatures and high humidity in the lowest several thousand feet of the atmosphere,” the NWS said.
