COVID-19 used as an ‘excuse’ to ban Tiananmen Square massacre vigils in Hong Kong

Asia correspondent Adrian Brown says vigils commemorating the Tiananmen Square massacre have been banned in Hong Kong for a second year in a row with authorities using COVID-19 as an “excuse”. “Last year this event was also banned by the police citing the same reason, COVID-19, but up until then the event had taken place every year for the past 30 years,” he said. Mr Brown said the police have argued the commemorations could “contravene” the national security law which was imposed on Hong Kong over a year ago because some of the organisers have openly called for an end to one party rule in China. “So the police are using the excuse of COVID-19 to ban this commemoration but it seems the real reason is politics because we have had only one untraceable infection of COVID-19 in Hong Kong during the past 38 days,” he said. “Basically, the city is back to normal, sports events are taking place, restaurants are open, shopping malls are open, so this seems to be down to politics”.
