Derek Chauvin’s defence seeks probation

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is set to be sentenced this month for the death of George Floyd. The defence is seeking probation and a new trial but the state wants him to get 30 years behind bars. In a memo filed Wednesday, Mr Chauvin’s lawyers presented reasons why he should receive probation, citing his age, lack of criminal history, court cooperation, and family support. Critics have noted the memo did not express any remorse or acceptance of responsibility, key factors as to whether probation will be granted or denied.
