Long lines were seen in Hong Kong’s Mong Kok district during the early hours of Thursday, June 24, as people gathered to purchase the last edition of Apple Daily after the pro-democracy newspaper announced its closure a day prior. Apple Daily said it had decided “to cease operation immediately after midnight” for its staff members’ safety, the BBC reported. On June 17, police raided Apple Daily’s offices and arrested five directors under a national security law. According to Apple Daily, the homes of staff members were also raided.
