The United States, Canada , the European Union and Britain have joined forces to impose sanctions on several senior officials in Belarus over the arrest of an opposition journalist. Authorities linked to the forced diversion of a passenger plane will face asset freezes and travel bans. The four regions released a joint statement saying "we are united in our deep concern regarding the Lukashenko regime's continuing attacks on human rights, fundamental freedoms, and international law". Raman Pratasevich was on board a Ryanair flight from Greece to Lithuania - when it was intercepted and diverted to Minsk where he was arrested. The incident sparked global outrage - in the wake of President Alexander Lukashenko's return to power in elections branded as "fraudulent" by the EU.
