Remaining survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre attended President Joe Biden’s speech at the Greenwood Cultural Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 1 to mark 100 years since the horror event. On Monday, Biden became the first sitting US president to commemorate the massacre by issuing a proclamation reflecting on the effects of the attack and honoring the Greenwood community. This video shared by Ngeri Nnachi shows attendants applauding the arrival of Hughes Van Ellis and Viola Fletcher, aged 100 and 107 respectively, two of the three remaining survivors. “I am just in awe!” Nnachi wrote in a tweet. As many as 300 black Americans were killed, and nearly 10,000 were left destitute and homeless after the 1921 massacre, when a white supremacist group raided, firebombed, and destroyed approximately 35 square blocks of a black neighborhood of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
