The United Kingdom's government could extend its COVID-19 vaccine rollout to include children after the medicine’s regulator approved the Pfizer vaccine for those aged 12 to 15. Weekly COVID tests have been carried out at secondary schools for months now to slow the spread of infection with the disruption caused by lockdowns significantly impacting student’s education. The Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisations will advise the government on whether to go ahead if it is safe to do so. “Now it’s good news that the MHRA have agreed that the vaccine is safe and effective, but this is based on trial data of about 2,000 children,” JCVI Deputy Chair Professor Anthony Harnden said. What we want to do is look internationally at other country’s experiences of vaccinating children just to check that there are no safety signals emerging from their data”.
