Vic government faces pressure after two fleeting contact cases declared false positives

A leading surgeon has criticised the Victorian government for having a “gross overreaction” after two cases linked to the current Melbourne outbreak were declared false positives. Despite the backdown there is no sign it will mean an early end to Melbourne’s second week of lockdown even though the two cases were presented as examples of concerning fleeting transmission between strangers. The primary close contacts of the cases will be released, and the exposure sites will be rescinded, including every current at risk location in Anglesea. The so-called fleeting transmission has been a major factor behind Victoria’s extend lockdown despite some medical experts disputing the current outbreak’s actual infectiousness. Victoria’s Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien joined calls for an early exit to the current lockdown tweeting, “if the basis for the lockdown extension turned out to be false, it should end”.
